As a leading provider of Warehouse Management System (WMS) solutions, Indigo Software believes that the outlook for the warehousing sector is very healthy.

The growth in e-commerce warehousing and the need for increased automation due to the challenges of Brexit and the pandemic are really driving demand for best-of-breed solutions that can deliver rapid return on investment (ROI) productivity improvements in the warehouse.

The new Indigo WMS QuickStart Program enables companies to quickly transform and optimise their warehousing operations. QuickStart provides rapid, fixed price, low risk WMS deployment with faster ROI.

QuickStart offers a scalable cloud-based WMS solution with a simple to manage low cost subscription model, with no maintenance costs, no support costs and no server costs. QuickStart is delivered by Indigo Software’s team of leading industry experts.

To tackle climate change, countries and organisations are being asked to come forward with ambitious emissions reductions targets that align with reaching net zero by the middle of the century.

A significant part of the total building stock, the associated carbon footprint of warehouses is an important consideration for all companies who want to act sustainably.

Operating a carbon neutral warehouse is something many companies will aspire to, but they may not have the resources to retrofit solar panels, rainwater irrigation, geothermal heat pumps and special cooling systems.

Instead, a more accessible route to take can be the introduction of a WMS and automation technology in the warehouse. This can deliver benefits that have a significant impact on energy / resource consumption levels and carbon footprint.

Examples of how a WMS can reduce carbon emissions include:

  • Operating with a smaller warehouse footprint
  • Minimising handling to reduce energy consumption
  • Reducing product and packaging waste
  • Operational analysis for further refinements
  • Removing paper from the warehouse

One key trend that Indigo Software sees is the increasing use of Digital Twins in warehousing.

Digital twins provide a cost effective way to model innovation, rather than implementing changes and risking that they may not work out as expected, using a digital twin means any new development can be robustly tested and fine-tuned, before it goes live.

In the warehouse, applications for digital twins are very widespread, since achieving ‘always-on’ efficiency is key to success. However, it can be difficult to experiment with operational changes during busy periods without impacting business as usual.

Given the extreme pressures inside the warehouse currently, due to Brexit, Covid-19, transitions to e-commerce, staffing shortages - the list goes on – digital twins can be extremely useful.

Digital twins can bring deep insights into the way warehouses are planned, designed, operated, and optimised, helping to achieve cost savings and higher profits. Today, with shipping rates, fuel and energy prices, raw materials, plus the cost of recruiting warehouse operatives at an all-time high, finding ways to save money is critical.

Using data captured within a WMS, it is possible to create a digital twin of the warehouse and fully simulate operations to probe how to achieve continuous improvement targets.
