It’s a really exciting time to be involved in the logistics sector. The COVID-19 induced boom of e-commerce shows no signs of letting up and this is creating significant opportunities to automate mission-critical processes in warehouses and distribution centres across the UK.

Continually increasing consumer demands creates a higher risk to implement new technologies – consumers want faster deliveries but it is a challenge to implement automated systems without some disruption to short term performance.

This creates a huge role for technology providers to play in not only providing the right solutions, but also ensuring the implementation of these solutions is as seamless as possible to minimise any perceived impact on the consumer - agility is absolutely key.

As an innovation-led business, we are continually looking at ways of innovating with our technology, partners and business practices to continue to add the most value we can to our customer base.

We have a medium-term plan to increase the scalability of our AMR platform, enabling us to deliver increased levels of value to logistics providers through both hardware, and more importantly, software, increasing the potential flexibility of our solutions and, in turn, enabling logistics providers to be more agile and develop a stronger competitive advantage.

In addition, the expansion of our risk management consultancy will enable our customers to go into investment decisions with their eyes wide open knowing exactly what the risks are (from a business, functional and worker safety perspective) and how Omron will mitigate them to achieve the best possible outcome. This will be underpinned by significant short-term investment in our proof-of-concept capability.

If there is one thing we have all learned from the COP26 conference, it is that we all have a part to play in ensuring the future of the world in which we live.

Omron has long been an advocate of doing business as sustainably as possible. We already have a head office in the UK which is powered exclusively by renewable energy sources and we are initiating plans to migrate to a fully electric company car fleet.

Furthermore, our investment in technology development has been done with the sustainable production and movement of goods in mind. Leveraging the power of automation and big data to both eliminate and unlock waste by increasing the efficiency of materials handling systems and minimising the amount of “air” being transported across the supply chain. In a broader sense, our AMR platform is also seeing significant growth in new areas such as Agritech, renewable energy and healthcare, further harnessing Omron’s reputation as a sustainable automation provider.

It is clear that sustainability is vital to the future success of the sector. Consumers are becoming increasingly demanding both in terms of logistics performance and sustainability.

We are rapidly moving to a situation where same-day delivery is expected at minimal or no cost whilst doing this in as green a way as possible is a prerequisite for securing major contracts with manufacturers and retailers.

The amount of information about a product being readily available to consumers has massively increased, enabling consumers to understand how far their product has travelled to get to them, the full composition of the product’s packaging and even the human cost of production and transportation.

These are all areas consumers, and therefore the supply chain as a whole, seek to minimise.
